There is an appealing story to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just over the dividing line from next door Thailand, in which casino wagering is illegal. Eight casinos are established in a relatively small location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling dens is in a perfect location, a 3 to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular betting locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal capital accrued from the gambling dens ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over 12.5 million, and there are a number of controls requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is required to be mostly Thai; although, financing sources are cryptic. The borders are ceremoniously open from 0900 to 1700, and although visas are apparently necessary to pass, there are means around this, as is real of many borders.
The original Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only 1 gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked bateau casino, highlights 150 slot machines and 60 table games. The Naga river boat is open all day and night with forty two tables of mini-baccarat banque, four tables of 21, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly followed. A total of 150 slot machine games and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four one armed bandits and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 slot machines and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and sixty six of the common tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive resort and hotel building that highlights numerous luxuries aside from the casino, which provides ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 slot machine games and eighty eight gaming tables.
