There is an appealing story to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just across the border from next door Thailand, in which gambling hall gambling is not allowed. Eight gambling dens are situated in a generally tiny space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime area, a three to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular gaming locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The astonishing capital gained from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million, and there are a couple of restrictions constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; although, funding sources are vague. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and though visas are apparently needed to pass, there are means around this, as is true of many border crossings.

The initial Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored ship casino, highlights 150 slots and sixty tables. The Naga river boat is open 24 hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat, four tables of blackjack, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The first casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are one hundred and fifty slots and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slot machines and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and ninety six table games, including 87 punto banco (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slots and 66 of the familiar table games, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight casinos in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international resort and hotel building that features many comforts in addition to the gambling den, which houses ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 slot machine games and eighty eight tables.
