There is an appealing background to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just across the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling hall gaming is prohibited. Eight casinos are situated in a relatively small location in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia casinos is in a prime destination, a three to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai laborers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of controls constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is required to be mainly Thai; still, financing sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and even though visas are allegedly necessary to pass, there are methods around this, as is accurate of many borders.

The first Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just one casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary ship casino, highlights one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and sixty gaming tables. The Naga casino never closes with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, 4 tables of vingt-et-un, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are 150 slots and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slots and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 slot machines and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and 66 of the common table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 casinos in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machine games and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international resort and hotel building that highlights many comforts aside from the gambling den, which offers 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slots and 88 table games.
